Homeless advocates critical of sweeps around Coors Field ahead of Rockies Opening Day

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:19:17 GMT

Preparations are well underway outside Coors Field as Opening Day approaches for the Colorado Rockies. But there’s one act that’s drawing harsh criticism.“It’s disgraceful, and they’re not trying to solve the problem,” said Grant Francis, an advocate with Mutual Aid Monday, which provides meals every Monday night to those experiencing homelessness. “They’re just trying to provide some optics that make it look like they’re trying to do something.”Homeless advocates like Francis are calling out the City of Denver, yet again, for homeless encampment sweeps.“It doesn’t surprise me that Coors Field is one of the targets,” Francis said. “It’s anywhere where there’s an event that generates any kind of income for the city.”Read more at our partner, Denver7.

Keystone will become Colorado’s newest town following incorporation approval Tuesday

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:19:17 GMT

Keystone is poised to become Colorado’s newest town, which will end decades of governance by elected Summit County officials.Approximately 68% of voters cast ballots in favor of incorporation, with 291 votes of approval and 140 votes of disapproval, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night around 8:15 p.m.The decisive victory for advocates of incorporation puts the resort community on a path for self-governance — so long as voters also approve a charter, the governing document for the town, at a later date.“We’re happy that the citizens of Keystone see the need,” said Ken Riley, a Keystone resident who led the incorporation effort as president of two nonprofits, Incorporate Keystone and Keystone Citizens League. “This is the beginning of a major journey.”Read more at our partner, Summit Daily.Related ArticlesNews | Some Colorado communities don’t want psychedelic healing centers — but can they stop them? Colorado legislators take Uinta Basin Railway concerns to EPA, calling derailments ‘shockingly common’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:19:17 GMT

In the third letter from Colorado lawmakers to government regulators issued this month, Sen. Michael Bennet and Rep. Joe Neguse are now appealing to the Environmental Protection Agency for help in evaluating the risks of the Uinta Basin Railway Project. The railway project aims to create a new railway connection in Utah which would link up with an existing rail line in Colorado that runs through Eagle County along the Colorado River. The letter says an existing EPA review of the project “had several shortcomings,” including an omission of impacts to Colorado such as “the risk of a derailment and oil spill in the headwaters of the River.”Project supporters say the Uinta Basin Railway Project would move an essential product in a safe and cost-effective way, but detractors say that product — waxy crude oil extracted in Utah’s Uinta Basin — is too toxic of a substance to be transported alongside the Colorado River with how common train derailments are in the United States.Read more at our...
