DETROIT (AP) — About 13,000 auto workers have walked off the job at three targeted factories after their union leaders couldn’t reach a deal with Detroit’s automakers. The United Auto Workers union is seeking big raises and better benefits from General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. They want to get back concessions that the workers made years ago, when the companies were in financial trouble.A small percentage of the union’s 146,000 members walked off the job at a GM assembly plant in Wentzville, Missouri; a Ford factory in Wayne, Michigan, near Detroit; and a Stellantis Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.Shawn Fain, the combative president of the UAW, says the targeted strikes will give the union leverage in contract talks and keep the auto companies guessing about its next move.It could also make the union’s $825 million strike fund last much longer. Both sides began exchanging wage and benefit proposals last week. The European Commission successfully issues €5 billion in its 9th syndicated operation for 2023

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:02:24 GMT

The European Commission, which issues EU bonds on behalf of the EU, has raised an additional €5 billion in bonds in its 9th syndicated operation for 2023. The one-stop operation tranche consisted of the issue of a new seven-year bond maturing on 4 December, 2030. The market conditions behind the deal have been more contained as investors await clarification on further changes to European interest rates. However, the operation attracted strong interest from investors, who placed bids in excess of €46bn, representing an oversubscription rate of more than nine times and showing that the European Commission continues to benefit from strong access to the market. The proceeds of this operation will be used to support both the NextGenerationEU recovery program and the macro-financial assistance+ program for Ukraine, in line with the Commission's approach of issuing "EU-Bonds" under a single brand rather than separate obligations for different programs. With today's operation, the Commissio...

“I heard,” Cy the Cynic told me in the club lounge, “that all the wheels were stolen off a city police car last night.”“Really?”“The cops,” Cy said, “are working tirelessly to find the thief.”Today’s declarer had to find a missing queen — or thought so. Against his four hearts, West led the seven of diamonds, and East took the K-A and led a third diamond. South huddled, wondering which defender held the queen of trumps. He finally ruffed with the jack, but West overruffed. Since West had a sure club trick, South went down one.OPENING BID“Sorry,” South apologized. “I could have ruffed with the ace and let the jack ride, but East had opened the bidding, after all.”I would say East-West pulled off some robbery: They were plus 100 points, not minus 620. All South had to do was pitch a club on the third diamond. West ruffs, and dummy plays low. When South wins the spade shift, he can draw trum...
